Slept in this morning and really got a refreshed start to the day! ...I thought!

Yes, I knew as soon as I packed all those long sleeved shirts that it would be hot and it is GLORIOUS!

Ann Marie and I headed out to the Pueblo Gem & Mineral Show. It is no secret that this is one of my favorite and this year is no exception...

Andesine & Labradorite from Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Mexico & Oregon: A Tucson Panel Discussion

The mining of natural red and green andesine in Tibet and near-colorless andesine in Inner Mongolia has been a subject of controversy. Large quantities of diffusion-treated andesine from Inner Mongolia entered the world markets without proper disclosure starting about 2000; however the idea that there might also be a source of natural red andesine in Tibet has been met with extreme skepticism from some quarters. This has not only polarized the gemological community, but has also created a lack of confidence in natural Oregon sunstone.

This program will present the latest results from field visits to both Tibet and Inner Mongolia, along with advanced testing of stones from each of those deposits.

Simple tests will be described to separate both Tibetan and Inner Mongolian andesines from Oregon sunstones. The purpose is to finally put to rest the controversy surrounding these stones.

Free samples will be handed out to all attendees.

Ed Swoboda's love for minerals started when he was a little kid and, at 94 years, he's still going strong. He was the owner of the Pala Chief Mine, Stewart Lithia Mine and the world-famous Tourmaline Queen Mine - which he still owns. In 1971 he, and partner Bill Larson, uncovered the blue cap tourmaline pocket at the Queen Mine which made, and continues to make, mineral history.

Notoriously shy, this pioneer and legend of the mineral collecting world has graciously accepted our invitation to come and present a brief overview of his experience and life in, "A Life of Gems & Minerals." This is sure to be a completely packed presentation so come early and stay late.

One of the best things about the Tucson Gem Show is the amount of knowledge you can garner from some of the greatest people in the Industry!

The AGTA GemFair is known for the quality of their Seminar Schedule every year! this year is no different with the addition of Laura Cave, Director of The Knot Market Intelligence as she shares insights from the 2011 Engagement Jewelry Study from The Knot, the #1 wedding planning site online!

“Bisbee Mines and Minerals”
Richard (Dick) Graeme - a Bisbee native, and was born in 1941 into a pioneer family of miners that first arrived here in 1883. Like his grandfather and father before him, Dick went to work underground as a laborer, as soon as he was old enough. By time the mines closed in 1975, he had become the Resident Geologist at the Copper Queen Branch. N ow, more than 50 years after Dick began working in the mines, he continues to work in the copper industry as the head of a company in Peru.

Bisbee was a mining town; few were its residents that did not depend on the mines for their livelihood. Thus, the tempo of the whole community revolved around the operations schedule and the mine whistle, which signaled that it was time to drop into the dark world of the miner. Bisbee was a mining town; where miners toiled in the hills that surround it, going ever deeper to win an important resource for the growing American industry.

Identifying Ruby Treatments COCONINO ROOM

Numerous treatments and combinations of treatments are applied to rubies from a variety of sources. Some of these treatments can have a significant effect on the value of rubies. During this lecture and hands on lab, you’ll learn what treatments you can identify with standard gemological equipment and how to detect their identifying characteristics. Treatments covered in this seminar include heat-treatment, glass filling, composite rubies, flux-assisted healed fractures, and beryllium diffusion.

Encore Set for GemJammin’ Tucson 2012

The American Gem Trade Association(AGTA) is pleased to announce the returnof GemJammin’ in conjunction with the 2012 AGTA GemFair™ Tucson. Back by popular demand, this open-to-alltrade professionals music jam, is a benefit for Jewelers For Children. The event will be held at The Hut onFebruary 2, 2012, from 8PM to the last lingering note fades in the earlymorning hours. Participation andattendance is open to all members of the gem, mineral and jewelryindustries.

OnFebruary 2, 2012 GemJammin’Tucson 2012 will offer the opportunity forjewelry industry musicians to take the stage, playing together in an un-rehearsed,and spontaneous musical evening. AGTA is once again producing and underwriting this unique event.

“In 2011 GemJammin’ netted over $5,000 for Jewelers for Children,” said AGTA’s CEO Douglas K. Hucker, “I’m surewe can top that this time. We expect more musicians and more fans to performand attend,” he continued.

GemJammin’ Tucson 2012 is now actively seeking sponsors and musicians for earlyregistration. New to GemJammin’ 2012is pre-registration on the web that allows musicians to schedule the time theywould like to jam and the musicians they would like to play with at www.gemjammin.com.

Just released by the AGTA GemFair Tucson...Nov. 23, 2011

The American Gem Trade Association released its educational lineup for the 2012 AGTA GemFair™ Tucson Free Seminar Program. This four-day program provides a wealth of information, presented by industry leaders and innovators.

Educational tracks cover gemology, sales, marketing, training, appraising, estate jewelry, fair trade, travelogues, regulatory issues and much more. AGTA offers over 40 free seminars during the GemFair that are chosen to help you succeed in the colored gemstone and pearl category.

Speakers at this year’s GemFair include popular industry presenters like Richard Drucker of GemWorld International, Kate Peterson of Performance Concepts, renowned gemologist Alan Hodgkinson, Gary Roskin, GIA’s John Koivula and Dr. James Shigley, Diane Flora of the American Gem Society, David Peters of Jewelers of America, Antoinette Matlins of the Gemstone Press, and AGTA’s Adam Graham.

There are also many new presenters on a variety of topics that relate to the colored gemstone and pearl business.

The Knot, the premier bridal magazine and online community, is presenting two sessions within the seminar program this year. Laura Cave, Director of The Knot Market Intelligence will share insights from their comprehensive Engagement Jewelry Study in one session, then provide key social media tips in another.

MJSA's At the Bench Live Returns to AGTA GemFair

MJSA will present its signature At the Bench Live demonstrations at the 2012 AGTA GemFair Tucson, Jan. 31 through Feb. 5 at the Tucson Convention Center. The interactive sessions will run daily and feature renowned artisans showing bench and design techniques that attendees can readily apply to their own operations. Related articles from MJSA Journal, the association's flagship monthly magazine, will be distributed at each session.

How to Identify Previous Repairs in Jewelry

Presenter: Arthur Anton Skuratowicz, Director of Education at the Jewelry Training Center

It happens all the time: A jeweler goes to repair a piece of jewelry, only to discover that the piece had already undergone previous repairs--and the work was less than stellar. At best, this creates a few new headaches; at worst, it leads to the jewelry being severely damaged. Attendees will learn how to identify these "danger points" before it's too late.

Working with Gemstones: The Designer's Challenges

Presenter: Alishan Halebian, award-winning goldsmith/designer

When faced with designing a piece around a gemstone--especially one with an unusual cut or other uncommon characteristic--designers and goldsmiths have a double-edged challenge: Create a design that brings out the gem's unique aspects, but also ensures the stone is securely set and protected. Award-winning designer and master goldsmith AlishanHalebian will demonstrate how he accomplishes both tasks to best ensure the gem is exquisitely showcased.

Venerable traditions have built up regarding how bench jewelers should go about their craft. And, like all traditions, some may be true--and some may be little more than tall tales. This session will separate fact from myth, and attendees will come away with new insights into accepted procedures for equipment maintenance, the selection of tools for specific tasks, or simple safety procedures.

Using Handmade Chain in Custom Designs

As consumer demand for custom jewelry grows, so too are the ways in which jewelers are creating unique, personalized pieces. One method to add personalization is through the use of handmade chain. Today I sent in the deposit for the house I'm renting for my two weeks in Tucson and it always makes me eager for February...so, I started going through my photos albums and organizing photos in albums. I keep coming across things I meant to post but ran out of time and never got a chance.

I know it's old but I found this great video with the Mayor on Opening Day of the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show - AKA The Main Event - to take you back and over the next couple days I will be posting from the show.

Well, the wait is finally over - the 2011 edition of What's Hot In Tucson is available!!!

This is our fifth year covering the Tucson show and every year it gets better and better. Then we're off to the newly developed, and quickly growing, Pueblo Inn Gem & Mineral Show. This is their second year where they've created an International Fine Mineral Sectionand it's one of the more fun and eclectic stops in our journey.

Next, we stop off at the Fine Minerals Internationalshow where we get a sneak peek at their gallery-like showroombefore it opens to the public. One of the biggest thrills of the entire show is when masterpieceafter masterpiece comes out of the safe for our private viewing. It's almost Wonka-esque.

The next stop is up at theWestward Look Mineral Show (aka Fine Mineral Show: Tucson) filled with some of thefinest dealers on the planet. This is what I consider a mineral time machine - you arrive on a Friday and before you know it, it's Monday and you have no idea where the time has gone!!!

Our whirlwind adventure ends at the grand-daddy show of them all - TheTGMS Showat the Tucson Convention Center (or as everyone refers to it - The Main Show). This is the show that started them all and it never disappoints. Display case after display case is filled with specimens, oddities, treasures and more all interwoven among the dealer booths and ice cream stands (ok, there may be only one ice cream stand but I must have visited it a dozen times over the weekend).

In all, it'sthree long weeks in Tucson seeing and filming minerals every single day. We've taken those 504 hours of time and, for your convenience, distilled it and compressed it down to only 4 hours on 2 DVDs!!! How nice.

And last but not least, for the past five years everyone has been asking about a certain thing that we FINALLY added as a surprise ending. Want to know what it is? Remembering Tucson: Bathrobe Couple, or...Only in Tucson!

Anyone who has been reading this blog knows that the Tucson Gem Show is held annually across the entire city of Tucson. Most shows are held in various hotels and vendors show in their rooms.

So imagine this...I have just finished viewing a room of stunning minerals at the Fine Mineral Show at the Westward Look Resort, probably the highest of high end Mineral Shows. I was waiting for friends and a lovely couple walks up asking if it is OK to look? They weren't sure if you had to pay to go in or what. Of Course I said feel free...did I mention that this couple was in Terry Robes and had just stepped out of the Jacuzzi?

We soon drew a crowd of people- it was such a great reminder that we are after all at a Resort Hotel. Most people book their room at the Westward Look for the views and ability to relax a short distance from the hustle & bustle that is downtown Tucson during the shows.

So they enjoyed the show - relaxed in comfort!

Tucson Gem Show: the GJX!

The other day I went over to the GJX show - this is a NOT TO BE MISSED show! I can't say that strongly enough...it boasts some of the finest colored gems dealers with traditional and rare gem dealers, an amazing International Pavilion and the awe inspiring work of the Idar-Oberstein Carvers.

Photos aren't allowed at this show...but due to a great relationship with several dealers I have a few glimpses at some of my favorite venues.

The gorgeous Oregon Sunstone of the Dust Devil Mine - these guys are always eager to talk about their mines and new finds...their booth hosts an assortment of rough, cut gems, beads and carvings.

In the International Pavilion I ran into Poor Boy Opals...

Jewelry Trends at Tucson Gem Show - Special Guest Post!

Should be helpful for those of you planning and already building Spring and Summer Collections.

Tucson Gem Show Jewelry Trends

Each year we trek to Tucson to meet with colleagues and see what is trending in the jewelry trade. We walk the show floors to get a feel for what is popular and what is fading in our segment of the industry. Here is what we noticed this year.

Heating Up

-The lapidary stone trend is still growing and evolving. The semi-precious cabochons, slices and tiny geodes that picked up steam last year were now joined by even more stone cuts. Fine gems like corundum were widely available in cabs and tiny slices. Rough stones, particularly rough diamonds, were more common this year. Rough cut crystals and rocks were mounted in oversized prong settings in addition to the bezel set polished stones that have become so popular.

-Mixed media was huge. Tucson shows exhibited a wider range of materials than ever with an emphasis on textures. Materials like leather, chain, fabrics and cord were mingled with found objects, stone and paper. Seed bead stitching and bezeling were used in collage designs and bibs. The Steampunk trend was more widespread, as was a growing shabby chic romantic trend.

-The chain trend continued to evolve as well with opera length, single strand, fine chains with or without station links in a lot of booths. Layered chain looks, bibs and charm bracelets also continued to be strong.

-Rings were everywhere with evermore creative mountings and designs. Plus they were huge! Stones, crystals, watch faces, carvings – you name it and it was available on a ring. The emphasis in this group was on the more interesting lapidary cuts and carved gems instead of traditional prong head mounts with faceted gems.

-Alternative metals gained ground this year as precious metals continue to set records. Tungsten, titanium, stainless steel, brass and plated base metals with various patina effects and finishes significantly expanded the metallic palette.

Fading Out

-Stone and glass beads were definitely still available in Tucson but their presence is fading. There was more emphasis on stones for mounting, pearls, castings and component based products.

-Bali style again was still there but not in the large numbers like before. The high price of silver seems to be taking a toll on this market segment and fewer exhibitors made the trip from Asia.

-Circles as a design motif finally seem to be losing steam. The simple circle accents were replaced by more elaborate charms, pendants and montage designs.

Blue Cap Productions at the Tucson Gem Show

For some of us two weeks of gems, minerals and jewelry just isn't enough...or is it that it is too much and we need a "do-over"?

The good folks at Blue Cap Productions give us the opportunity to bring a small piece home with us.

Their "What's Hot In Tucson" video series which has always offered the hottest and the newest in the mineral world, now has an insider's view of the AGTA GemFair show.

It is great watching Bryan Swoboda work - his family has been important in the gem and mineral world for decades, so between him and Dave Wilbur (host) they "get" what people want to know.

Last year with the addition of the always interesting Bob Jones (of Rock & Gem magazine) and Delphine LeBlanc they expanded this informative series.

While I was checking out the Westward Look Fine Mineral Show I got some great "behind the scenes" shots of Bryan and the crew at work.

I especially love the shot to the right - Dave Wilbur steps aside and Bob Jones interviews his son Evan Jones, of Evan Jones Minerals.

Collector's Day at the Westward Look Fine Mineral Show

This is on of the days in Tucson I most look forward to...I get together with Margo (Gemologist) and Roni (Geologist) and head out to Collector's Day at the Westward Look Resort Fine Mineral Show.

If you are familiar with the Fine Mineral Shows you know that it gathers some of the finest mineral dealers in the world into 4 sets of suites at the exclusive Westward Look Resort. It is basically akin to the quality you find in the gem collections of the larger Natural History Museums.

Saturday at this event features the collection of a noted collector - this year that was Wayne Sorenson:

Wayne Sorensen has become incredibly well known for his impeccable taste in acquiring some of the finest mineral specimens we've seen. This February, Wayne will put on exhibit some of these outstanding specimens from his personal collection.

The lobby buzzed with excitement as the crowd grew - I overheard Wayne say..."Every specimen has a story...want to hear the story of that Pyrite?"

I was especially partial to this Tourmaline from the Himalaya Mine in Southern California and the assortment of gem types in the piece below.

Bryan Swoboda of Blue Cap Productions was onsite filming their latest edition of "What's Hot In Tucson" - I got a shot of him filming lobby cases.

This event never fails to impress me - I always come away knowing more than I went in knowing.

WholeBead Show at the Windmill Inn

This is a first for my blog - I have never covered this show before...mostly the location is pretty far from the rest of the shows AND I am really not much of a beadgirl. So - that being said, when I got a note that one of my original Twitter friends was showing there I decided it was time to check it out!

While this show is a little out of the way...they provide shuttle service so it is an easy destination...and it was PACKED! My roomate, Ann Marie of Heart's Desire Jewelry, needed to stop at Saki Silver so we made a trip out.

There are lots of great vendors at this show...in my limited time there, these are the ones that stood out for me!

Just inside the lobby was a Bay Area gem bead dealer, Best Bead Shop, that Ann Marie knew...he has some really fine and unusual beads in pyrite, moss agate, included quartz (many varieties). Beautiful quality and above and beyond that Sanjay and Amy Margaret are delightful to deal with. I love to shop where the workers are having fun! (note: they are listed at the show as Rocky's Designs)

Next stop Saki Silver - I really wanted to get you a shot of this room - and just as we were leaving it cleared out enough to see just how extensive the array of clasps, beadcaps and findings is from this company.

If you want Silver from Saki you had to go to this venue because their booth at Best Bead only handles Copper, Brass and Shibuichi. Meeting a wholesale minimum at this shop isn't hard to do.

Last but not least - my girl Heather...long long ago (;-p) at the advent of Twitter there really weren't a lot of jewelry folks using the platform and you had time to get to know each other. Heather Parker DiSimone is @BeadinPath on Twitter, her shop The Beadin Path in Freeport, Maine specializes in Vintage - Metals and Acrylic.

When I walked into her room she was giving a great demo of the new Riveting & Piercing Tool by Crafted Findings. What a fabulous tool - as a Metalsmith I will solder a join just to not have the struggle of riveting, but this tool really simplifies the process, from piercing the hole to adding the rivet. I will be posting more on this tool on the Daily Jewel.

All week I have been searching for the latest Pantone Pink - Honeysuckle - have you seen it? found a great tray of vintage acrylic beads at The Beadin Path for you!

Renee Newman Debuts New Book At AGTA GemFair...

Today at AGTA GemFair, Renee Newman debuted the newest edition of her Exotic Gems series at the NAJA booth.

Also available were her other guides - I picked up a copy of "The Pearl Buying Guide" for one our roommates - it always feels special to have an autographed copy of a good reference.

In words that everyone can understand Renee Newman walks you through the chemical, physical and optical qualities and then she takes you to the mines, shows you what it takes to cut some of these exotics and then finishes up with some of the most gorgeous photos of faceted gems, carved gems and gems in jewelry...and she even talks about the Metaphysical Lore of the gem.

The popularity of the television shopping networks has opened up a new era in gems in jewelry - there was a day when some faceted gems and beads on the market today were considered to soft for jewelry and they were only available as specimens for mineral collectors - those days are gone and this series gives us the information we need to make decisions about using these materials in jewelry and for those looking to purchase them.

With over 400 photos - this book is worth buying just for the "eye candy" value - delightful to see such a great range from bridge to fine jewelry - cutters to carvers.

Inside the Designer Pavilion with Galatea!

As I mentioned in my previous post - photos aren't allowed at AGTA Gemfair - unless a Designer gives permission and so here you go...an exclusive look at what's new from one of my favorites...Galatea!

"Galatea: Jewelry by Artist is the creation of Chi Galatea Huynh. Known for its hand-sculpted pearls, Diamond In a Pearl and gem-enucleated Galatea Pearl jewelry."

You may all know Galatea as the "Diamond In A Pearl" people and don't worry there are still producing these beauties, along with various gemstone bead nucleated pearls...but here in Tucson they are introducing several new designs and unique new ideas in pearls and beyond!

People who aren't familiar with the product assume these pearlescent beauties are laser carved - but each one of the pearls are hand carved to reveal the unexpected burst of color provided by the gemstone nucleated pearl.

One new twist on the hand carved pearls are what I am referring to as hand etched pearls (sorry for taking liberties Barbara). Luscious Black Tahitian Pearls with an undulating wave pattern hand etched into the surface of the pearl. Why do I describe these as etched rather than carved? the cut doesn't go through to the nucleation layer, only through a few layers of nacre. This gives you the peacock surface of each pearl juxtaposed against a solid black layer causing an almost glittering effect...these HAVE to be seen in person!

The next new item that caught my eye was this ring that featured Abalone! Clean, sculptural lines made simply elegant with the added punch of color from the mother of pearl - this may be my new favorite!

Arthur Skuratowicz is exactly what I love in an educator - he doesn't talk over your head and he encourages you to think for yourself, all with a laid back and very personable attitude.

Arthur Anton Skuratowicz, GJG (GIA), is Director of Education at the Jewelry Training Centerin Colorado Spring, Colorado, and a Senior Member of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers. He and his wife, Julie Nash, are co-authors of Working with Gemstones: A Bench Jeweler’s Guide (MJSA Press).

He addressed a standing room only crowd and with the large screen and great camera placement, everyone could view the demo like you were looking over his shoulder.

Identifying and Working with Treated Gems at the Bench

Most gem-set jewelry that crosses a jeweler’s bench contains treated stones. Sometimes, such as with the recent rash of lead-glass-filled rubies, these treatments aren’t known until the stone fractures or discolors once the job is underway. Learn how to spot common treatments, as well as how to handle a variety of commonly treated stones.

Filigree Face-off, Part 1: Creating an Edwardian-Style Pendant by Hand
Presenter: Lee Krombholz

In the first session of this two-part seminar, Lee Krombholz hand-fabricates a modern filigree-style disc pendant from sheet stock—dapping the contours, sketching the design, piercing the metal, adding bezels, setting repurposed diamonds, and doing the finishing and millgraining—in an attempt to create the lightest-weight pendant possible (a necessity in an age of sky-high gold prices).

February 6
Filigree Face-off, Part 2: Creating an Edwardian-Style Pendant with CAD
Presenter: Lee Krombholz

In the second session of this two-part seminar, Krombholz creates the same filigree pendant as in the first session, only this time in CAD—experimenting with casting tolerances, re-piercing the design, setting the diamonds, and doing a final finish. The time needed to complete the CAD project, along with any inherent challenges, will then be compared to the hand-fabrication process, and the two pendants will be evaluated to see which process produced the lightest-weight piece. (The presenter thanks caster Tom Primavera, whose predilection for hand-fabrication techniques inspired this "face-off.")

Cameras aren't allowed at AGTA so...I got some shots of the Education & Information Aisle at the top of the show venue and some overhead photos of the show floor.

From the signage you see immediately that there is a lot to see at the AGTA GemFair!!!

From check - in the first thing you see and probably my favorite area of the show is the Grand Ballroom. This houses the Spectrum of Design Jewelry Pavilion, Antique & Estate Jewelry Pavilion and the Tools & Equipment Pavilion.

You can see all those amazing Spectrum Award winning Jewelry Designs and the Cutting Edge Gem Cutting Award winners up close and personal.

Spectrum of Design Jewelry Pavilion:
The Designers featured in this area are true trendsetters in the Industry, and one thing I wasn't aware of they are all doing business in North America. Here you will find gorgeous work by Designers like; Mark Schneider, Todd Reed, Sarah Graham and Alishan to name a few.

Antique & Estate Jewelry Pavilion
This area is filled with fabulous one of a kind pieces, antique gem and pearl jewelry from a variety of vendors. Be sure to stop in a see eFiligree - aside from their stunning displays of Cameo Habilles & more traditional Cameos - they feature a great array of authentic fully restored filigree mountings for engagement rings.

Tools & Equipment Pavilion
Here you will everything you need to make and market your beautiful creations...software, display, packaging, tools, and several refiners are available to answer your need for metal! Southeastern Findings booth is a tool geek's oasis! and don't forget to stop in an talk to United Precious Metal Refiners about their proprietary non-tarnish silver alloy!

Also on this floor is their Education & Information aisle which features trade press publications like JCK and Southern Jewelry News & Mid-America News. Followed by trade associations; Cultured Pearl Assoc., National Assoc. of Jewelry Appraisers, etc. Finished the hall with Schools - Jewelry Design Schools and Gemology Schools alike...this is where you will find GIA, Canadian Institute of Gemology and the California Institute of Jewelry Training.

Downstairs in the Gem Hall is where the action is this year their is a separate Colored Diamond Pavilion on the show floor and of course my most inspiring moment was meeting Etienne Perret and his son Michael. I have seen the designs on Facebook and in many magazine articles but if you get the opportunity, see it in person! Michael gave us a great talk on the Gem Ceramic used in most of the designs...OK, I'm gushing - back to the AGTA.

The addition this year of an Internet area on the show floor made verifying and taking orders easier and the Lounge was a comfortable way to end a long journey across a large show floor! ....wonder if they'd notice if I just curl up and stay!

I Discovered the Rainforest in Tucson...

I have been chatting with Rainforest Design on Twitter (she is @RainforestDesign) and since we are both in Tucson we decided to meet up! I have to tell you I have a new favorite vendor for carvings. These are cameo type carved shell but done in a whole new way!

You won't confuse these with your grandmother's Italian cameos...these are fresh new designs of flora and fauna, and everything in between, that the indigenous people in Panama are famous for carving in tagua.

The cameos are carved from the Queen’s Helmet shell (Cassis madagascariensis spinella) found in the waters of the Caribbean, also known as “Sardonyx”.

Sweet butterflies and hummingbirds sit next to frogs and geckos with a sea-life assortment on the next shelf.

These are modern pieces that will become the cherished heirlooms of your grandchildren.

Day Two: Opening Day - and New Finds!

It was opening day for AGTA & GJX - I stopped in but the shows are too busy (it's a good thing) to get good photos and since I will be speaking on a panel there tomorrow - I decided to take photos then. But it was great to catch up with people and actually hold pieces in your hand that you've only seen in photos.

Etienne Perret's work with colored diamonds is spectacular and the gem ceramic pieces are lovely but the feel really great on your skin...the piece on the left - hands down winner for both me and AnnMarie (one of my roomies). The feel of the pearl on your hand was silky smooth.

More Great Vendors at the Pueblo Gem & Mineral Show

Last year the Pueblo Gem Show added a Mineral Show and some of the finest mineral dealers have been lured to this venue. The first year they did fairly well but this year according to Pu Tzu of The UnCarved Block he is happy with the change. Not just because the business is good but he really enjoys the vibe of this event...and we love seeing the fab specimens and carvings he brings!

Right down the hall is Edwards Minerals - a nice with lovely pieces to show - I was drawn to this lovely Quartz on Pyrite - the light in the case loved it too.

One of my favorite finds from a couple years ago continues to top my list - the company Gems In Gems is an Italian Company headed by Volcanologist, Editor and Lapidary, Marco Campos Venuti. Stop in to see some of the most unusual gems in gems - alongside minerals that you may never have seen faceted before ...yep they have faceted Smithsonsite! This year he brought an amazing tray of Madagascar Ammonite formed for setting in jewelry.

It is a joy to visit this room the stones are gorgeous! and Marco and staff always make me smile!

GOOD MORNING TUCSON!!!

So after my 8 hour drive, a meeting with a dear friend and client, David Epstein, I went to check into the house I am sharing with some friends with the intention to fall into bed and collapse for the night...you know what happens to the "best laid plans".

I love this place - the house is darling, perfectly located in a nice little community. My roomies this year are Marilyn and her hubby Paul and Ann Marie - friends from a Yahoo! Group.

I am fighting the end of a cold and while the household went shopping and had dinner I got some work done and was ready for bed - then it happened...

Marilyn asked a question about the AGTA Seminars - so I got the Buyer Registration packet out and with that my plan for an early night went out the window!

But we are all up - bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for our first full day in Tucson!!! I think Marilyn & AnnMarie are heading to the Freeway Shows - I have people to check in with at the Riverpark Inn and then a Meet & Greet with the ISG tonight...So Tucson are you ready for us?

Tucson Gem & Mineral Show - the "Main Show"

Speaking as Exhibits Chair for the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show (tm) I am pleased to announce that we will have some truly spectacular exhibits this year. The theme is Minerals of California and there are at least 40 museum and private exhibits playing to that theme including several "group-shoot" cases with pegmatite minerals from Southern California that should be superb. This will include the first public unveiling of a magnificent brand-new find from the Oceanview Mine...resetting the standard for California kunzite.

For those jaded with pegmatites...there will also be a strong showing of non-pegmatite species...including some secondary base metal species that may blow your mind.

We will also host the first US Showing of the 774 ounce "Ausrox Nugget" from Australia, the third largest in captivity...and pretty to boot! Another highlight is the first US Showing of the Caerhays-Williams collection of classic Cornwall minerals...recently rescued from obscurity in the basement of a Cornish manor house!

This year will also feature a group of 12 exhibits of Calcite, organized by a cadre of die-hard calcite collectors including Chuck Houser, Phil Richardson and Terry Huizing. This will include worldwide killers, pseudomorphs, twins, fossils, speleothems (sensu latu...ie not ripped from wild caves) and a half dozen locality cases.

Plus the usual array of competitive and other exhibits featuring the best minerals in the world...and dealers to buy them from.
